Central Illinois libraries receive state funding for books, technology and improvements

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Libraries across Central Illinois are getting a financial boost from the state, with new grant money earmarked for books, technology, and building improvements. The funding, distributed through the Illinois State Library, aims to help local libraries modernize their collections and services.

Several libraries in the region will use the grants to purchase new computers, update software, and expand digital resources like e-books and online databases. Others plan to invest in physical upgrades, such as better lighting, shelving, and accessible seating areas. A portion of the money is also set aside for children's programming and adult literacy materials.

Library directors say the funding is critical at a time when demand for services is rising but local budgets remain tight. Many libraries have seen increased foot traffic and requests for internet access, job search help, and homework resources. The grants allow them to replace outdated equipment and add new titles without raising taxes or cutting hours.

State officials emphasized that the grants support not just reading, but also community connection. Libraries serve as gathering spaces, technology hubs, and lifelines for residents who lack home internet. The funding cycle is expected to cover projects through the next fiscal year, with some libraries already planning summer reading programs and tech workshops.
