New technology helps monitor flooding in Brevard County

New technology helps monitor flooding in Brevard County

Real-time flood tracking is coming to Brevard County, giving local officials and community members a powerful new tool to stay ahead of severe weather. The City of Cape Canaveral has partnered with WeatherSTEM to install new flood sensors and weather monitoring equipment that tracks storm conditions second by second.

The system uses a network of sensors placed in flood-prone areas to measure water levels, rainfall intensity, and wind speeds. Data streams directly to a public dashboard, so residents can see exactly what is happening in their neighborhood during a storm. City leaders say the technology will help emergency crews respond faster to flooding events and give people the information they need to make smart decisions about evacuation or sheltering in place.

Cape Canaveral has seen its share of heavy rain and storm surge over the years. Past hurricanes have left streets impassable and homes damaged. The new sensors aim to close the gap between when a storm hits and when help arrives. Instead of relying on scattered reports or waiting for water to rise, officials can watch conditions change in real time.

The partnership with WeatherSTEM also includes weather cameras and lightning detection. All of this feeds into a single platform that both city staff and the public can access. For a coastal community like Cape Canaveral, where weather can turn dangerous in minutes, this kind of instant data is a major upgrade. The system is already being tested and is expected to be fully operational before the next hurricane season.
