Penn Highlands, Conemaugh launch new surgical technology degree program

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - Penn Highlands Community College and Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center have announced a new associate degree program in surgical technology, set to begin in the fall. The collaboration is designed to meet a growing need for trained surgical technologists in the region.

Students in the program will complete classroom instruction at Penn Highlands and gain hands-on clinical experience at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. The curriculum covers sterile techniques, surgical instrumentation, patient preparation, and assisting during operations. Graduates will be eligible to sit for the national certification exam.

Officials from both institutions said the partnership addresses a critical workforce shortage in local healthcare. Surgical technologists play a key role in operating rooms, ensuring that equipment is sterile and ready, and that procedures run smoothly. The program is expected to help fill open positions at Conemaugh and other area hospitals.

The degree can be completed in two years. Enrollment is open now, with classes starting this fall. Financial aid and scholarship options are available for eligible students.
