Ukraine is now fielding a new counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) technology that automates nearly the entire interception process, according to the Ukrainian defence ministry. The system reportedly handles 95 percent of the full interception cycle, from detection to neutralization, with minimal human input required.
The announcement marks a significant step in Ukraine's ongoing effort to counter the growing threat of enemy drones on the battlefield. Both sides in the conflict have heavily relied on unmanned aerial vehicles for reconnaissance, artillery spotting, and direct attacks. The new automated system is designed to respond faster than human operators, reducing the time between identifying a hostile drone and taking it down.
Defence officials stated that the technology integrates radar, optical sensors, and electronic warfare components into a single automated workflow. Once a target is classified as hostile, the system can track, engage, and neutralize the drone without manual intervention at each step. This speed is critical, as small drones often operate at low altitudes and can evade traditional air defence systems.
The deployment comes as Ukrainian forces face an increasing volume of drone incursions, including loitering munitions and reconnaissance quadcopters. By automating the interception cycle, the military aims to protect frontline troops and critical infrastructure more efficiently. The system also reduces the cognitive load on operators, who previously had to manage multiple tasks under pressure.
While specific technical details remain classified, the ministry emphasized that the technology is already operational in select units. Further rollout is expected as production scales up.
