Vendors pitch drone technology to Arkansas schools as option for stopping active shooters

Two drones zipped around an improvised race course at the Wyndham Riverfront hotel in North Little Rock on Tuesday, as dozens of men and women watched with rapt attention. The demonstration was part of a larger sales pitch aimed at school administrators and law enforcement officials: use unmanned aerial vehicles to stop active shooters before they can cause mass casualties.

The technology, offered by several defense and security contractors, is designed to deploy rapidly when a threat is detected. Once airborne, the drones can provide real-time video feeds to police, track a suspect's movements through hallways, and in some cases, carry non-lethal payloads like pepper spray or tasers. A few vendors even showcased models capable of ramming a shooter at high speed to disable them.

Proponents argue that drones offer a critical advantage: speed. In many school shootings, the attacker is neutralized by police within minutes, but those minutes can feel like an eternity. A drone launched from a nearby patrol car or a school roof can reach a classroom in seconds, giving officers a clear picture of the situation before they enter the building.

Critics, however, raise concerns about privacy and the potential for misuse. Civil liberties groups worry that constant aerial surveillance could turn schools into police states, while some educators question whether the money would be better spent on mental health resources or better door locks. The vendors acknowledged these concerns but stressed that the systems are intended only for emergency activation, not routine monitoring.

The Arkansas School Safety Commission, which organized the event, has not endorsed any specific product but is gathering data. For now, the drones remain an option on the table, as schools across the state weigh the cost of high-tech defense against the unthinkable.
