For the better part of a decade, the gospel of user experience was frictionless. Remove every click, shorten every form, autocomplete every search, and make the journey from desire to fulfillment as close to instantaneous as physics and code would allow. This philosophy produced some genuinely great products. It also produced a generation of interfaces that are so smooth, so optimized for completion, that they have started to feel hollow. We tap, we scroll, we swipe, and we often cannot remember what we actually did five minutes later.
The industry is now undergoing a quiet but significant correction. The trend is moving away from frictionless at all costs and toward intentional design. This is not a return to clunky, bureaucratic software. It is a recognition that the absence of friction is not the same as the presence of value. Sometimes, a little friction is exactly what a user needs to understand what they are doing, to feel in control, and to make a decision they will not regret tomorrow.

The frictionless movement swept that away. Companies like Amazon, Google, and later Stripe and Airbnb showed that every extra field in a form costs you customers.
