A coalition of 76 prominent civil rights, digital privacy, and community organizations has issued a forceful public letter condemning Meta's reported plans to integrate facial recognition technology into its Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. The coalition, spearheaded by the ACLU, warns that the move would create an unprecedented threat to personal privacy and civil liberties in public spaces.
The letter argues that embedding such powerful surveillance capabilities into everyday wearable devices would effectively normalize constant, secret identification. Individuals could be identified, tracked, and profiled without their knowledge or consent simply by walking past someone wearing the glasses. This, the groups state, poses a dire risk to free speech and assembly, as people may fear attending protests, political rallies, or seeking sensitive healthcare if they can be automatically identified.
The broad alliance emphasizes that the societal dangers far outweigh any potential convenience. They highlight the particular threat to marginalized communities, who are already subject to disproportionate surveillance and misidentification by flawed facial recognition systems. The signatories are calling on Meta to publicly abandon any development of this feature, stating that the very existence of such a tool in consumer glasses is incompatible with a free and open society. They urge the company to prioritize ethical design that protects, rather than invades, the private lives of individuals.
