The United States, United Kingdom, and Australia are moving ahead with a new phase of their Aukus security partnership, this time focusing on advanced underwater drone technology. The project aims to develop autonomous vehicles capable of operating at great depths for extended periods, with a primary mission of protecting critical undersea infrastructure such as internet cables and energy pipelines.
Officials from all three nations confirmed that the new initiative will involve joint research, shared sensor technology, and coordinated testing in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The underwater drones are expected to be used for surveillance, mine detection, and rapid response to any threats against seabed cables, which carry the vast majority of global data traffic.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns about rival nations mapping and potentially disrupting these cables. While the Aukus pact is best known for its plan to deliver nuclear-powered submarines to Australia, this drone project represents a more immediate and less controversial step. Military analysts note that the technology could also help monitor illegal fishing and track foreign naval activity in contested waters.
The three countries have not disclosed a specific timeline for deployment, but they have allocated significant funding for rapid prototyping. The drones are expected to be modular, allowing them to be fitted with different payloads depending on the mission. This approach is meant to keep the program flexible and adaptable to emerging threats in the underwater domain.
