California has named Ayushi Roy as its new chief technology officer, filling a vacancy left by Jonathan Porat, who stepped down in April. Roy brings experience from the federal level, having previously served at 18F, the digital services agency within the General Services Administration that helps government agencies improve their technology and user experience.
In her new role, Roy will oversee the state's technology strategy, including digital service delivery, cybersecurity, and modernization efforts across California agencies. Her appointment signals a continued push by the state to bring in leaders with hands-on experience in government tech transformation, particularly those familiar with agile development and human-centered design.
Roy's time at 18F involved working with various federal and state partners on projects aimed at making government services more accessible and efficient. That background is expected to help her navigate the complex landscape of California's sprawling IT infrastructure, which serves nearly 40 million residents.
Porat's resignation came after a tenure focused on consolidating IT operations and advancing data-driven policymaking. Roy now steps into that role at a time when the state is investing heavily in artificial intelligence, broadband expansion, and digital identity systems. Her appointment is effective immediately, though no specific start date was announced. State officials say they are confident her blend of federal experience and technical expertise will help accelerate ongoing initiatives.
