Artificial intelligence is moving so fast that even experts are struggling to keep up. The White House is reportedly considering reviewing some AI models before they are released to the public. The inventor of the Roomba is now unveiling an AI companion robot designed for emotional connection. Meanwhile, evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins is making headlines after saying conversations with AI convinced him it may actually be conscious.
Joining us to break it all down is our recurring AI expert from UNF, Josh Gellers. He says the pace of development is unlike anything we have seen before. Gellers notes that government oversight is becoming a central question. The idea of pre-release reviews could reshape how companies bring products to market. It might slow down innovation, but it could also prevent harmful uses before they start.
The emotional robot raises another set of questions. Gellers points out that people already form attachments to chatbots and virtual assistants. A physical robot designed for companionship could blur the line between tool and relationship. As for Dawkins, his comments about machine consciousness are controversial. Gellers suggests that even if AI is not truly conscious, the perception of consciousness changes how we treat it. The future of AI is not just about faster chips or better code. It is about how we decide to live with machines that think, talk, and maybe even feel.
