Idaho, Utah among finalists for nuclear waste, nuclear technology sites

Federal officials have narrowed the list of potential locations for a major nuclear waste management and technology complex, and both Idaho and Utah are still in the running. The chosen campuses would not just handle spent nuclear fuel and other radioactive byproducts. They could also become anchors for broader nuclear development, including new power plants, fuel processing facilities, and even large-scale data centers powered by small modular reactors.

The announcement comes after months of review by the Department of Energy, which is looking for sites with the right geology, existing infrastructure, and community support. Idaho's eastern desert region, already home to the Idaho National Laboratory, is seen as a natural fit due to its decades of nuclear research experience. Utah's west desert, near the Skull Valley area, has also been a longtime contender for storage projects, though past proposals have faced local opposition.

What sets this initiative apart is the scope. Rather than a simple dump site, the federal government wants a multi-use energy park. That means the winning location could attract private investment in advanced reactor designs, fuel recycling, and high-energy computing. Nuclear-powered data centers are a growing interest for tech companies looking for carbon-free, around-the-clock electricity.

A final decision is expected within the next year. Both states have political leaders pushing hard for the designation, citing job creation and energy security. Environmental groups, however, are raising concerns about long-term safety and transportation risks. For now, the two states wait, knowing that the choice could reshape their energy landscapes for decades.
