Heavy traffic is a daily reality for millions of people in Lagos, Nigeria, where rapid population growth has placed increasing pressure on existing transport infrastructure. For years, commuters have relied on informal minibuses and motorbikes, often facing long waits, unpredictable fares, and safety concerns. Now, a Nigerian mobility company called MAX.ng is trying to change that by using technology to bring order and efficiency to the chaos.
MAX.ng operates a platform that connects users to a network of drivers using cars, buses, and three-wheeled tuk-tuks. But unlike a simple ride-hailing app, the company focuses on a deeper integration of technology into the entire transport ecosystem. Their system uses real-time data analytics to predict demand, optimize routes, and reduce idle time for drivers. This means fewer empty vehicles clogging the roads and more efficient trips for passengers.
The company also tackles the issue of vehicle financing. Many drivers in Nigeria cannot afford a new car. MAX.ng uses its data to assess driver performance and offers asset financing, allowing drivers to lease vehicles with daily payments. This model increases the number of reliable, well-maintained vehicles on the road. all drivers are trained and vehicles are tracked via GPS, which helps improve safety standards in a sector often criticized for accidents. By digitizing payments and trip records, the company also brings transparency to an industry that has long operated on cash. While challenges like fuel costs and road conditions remain, MAX.ng demonstrates how targeted technology can start to reshape urban mobility in one of Africa's most congested cities.
