FLORES, Guatemala - This March, rangers on patrol in the Maya Forest stumbled across the feathers of hunted birds and freshly cleared paths through the trees. The signs led them to a 2-hectare opening in the forest where squatters likely planned to settle and then expand. The people who had cleared the forest were gone by the time rangers arrived, but the damage was done.
Now, Guatemala is testing a new tool to catch this kind of activity faster. Instead of relying solely on patrols or satellite images, authorities are using artificial intelligence to listen for the sounds of deforestation. The system, known as "Guardian," uses acoustic sensors placed deep in the jungle. These devices pick up noises like chainsaws, trucks, and gunshots. The AI then analyzes the audio in real time and sends alerts to park rangers.
The Maya Forest is one of the largest remaining tropical forests in the Americas, but it loses thousands of hectares each year to illegal logging, land grabs, and drug traffickers. Traditional monitoring methods often miss small-scale clearing, which can grow into larger problems. Satellite images can be delayed by cloud cover, and patrols cannot cover every remote corner.
Proponents of the new technology say it offers a faster, cheaper way to protect the forest. Critics warn that the system could be used for surveillance beyond environmental enforcement. For now, officials are focused on testing the sensors in a pilot area. If successful, they plan to expand the network across the entire reserve.
