Coral restoration efforts could be dramatically improved with technologies that support the survival and growth of baby corals, suggests a new study. Researchers have discovered that two innovative devices, the Underwater Zooplankton Enhancement Light Array (UZELA) and 3D printed artificial settlement modules, can significantly boost the population of certain coral species.
The UZELA is designed to enhance the availability of zooplankton, which serves as a vital food source for young corals. By providing optimal lighting conditions, this device aims to attract and increase zooplankton populations in coral habitats. Meanwhile, the 3D printed settlement modules offer a suitable environment for coral larvae to attach and grow, mimicking natural reef structures.
These combined technologies present a promising avenue for coral restoration initiatives, especially in areas affected by climate change and pollution. The potential to improve the survival rates of coral offspring could play a crucial role in the recovery of coral ecosystems, ultimately contributing to the health of marine biodiversity.
