Korean Air unveils AI pilot technology at South Korea expo

Korean Air has introduced a range of artificial intelligence technologies designed for military aircraft, drone operations, air taxi traffic management, and automated aircraft inspections. The company displayed these systems at the Korea International Air and Defense Exhibition in Incheon, marking one of the first public demonstrations of its AI-driven aviation tools.

The new technology includes AI assistance for combat pilots, helping them make faster decisions in complex scenarios. For drone platforms, the airline showed how AI can coordinate multiple unmanned aircraft for surveillance or logistics missions without direct human control. Another system focuses on urban air mobility, using AI to manage traffic for electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles, or air taxis, which are expected to operate in crowded city skies in the coming years.

Korean Air also presented a robotic inspection system that uses AI to scan aircraft exteriors for damage or wear. The system can detect cracks, dents, or corrosion more consistently than human inspectors, reducing turnaround time for maintenance checks. The airline said these tools are part of a broader push to integrate AI into every level of aviation, from flight operations to ground services.

The expo drew defense and aerospace leaders from around the world, but Korean Air emphasized that its AI technology is not limited to military use. The company sees civilian applications in cargo drones, airport security, and passenger aircraft maintenance. No specific deployment dates were announced, but Korean Air said it is testing the systems with several partners and expects to roll them out gradually over the next few years.
