Lexington Park Library To Open New Makerspace, Expanding Access To Technology And Hands-On Learning

Lexington Park Library To Open New Makerspace, Expanding Access To Technology And Hands-On Learning

The Lexington Park Library will open a new makerspace on June 23, giving the St. Mary's County community wider access to 3D printing, creative technology, and STEM resources. The space is designed for students, families, and local entrepreneurs who want to explore hands-on learning and digital fabrication tools.

The makerspace will offer equipment like 3D printers, vinyl cutters, and other creative tech gear. Library officials say the goal is to bridge the gap between traditional library services and modern skill-building. Patrons can use the tools for school projects, small business prototypes, or personal creative work.

The opening comes as libraries across the region look for ways to support workforce development and digital literacy. Staff will provide training on using the equipment safely and effectively. No special membership is required beyond a standard library card.

The project has been in the works for over a year, funded through a combination of local grants and library budget allocations. The new space is located on the main floor of the library, replacing an older computer lab. Hours will match the library's regular schedule, with additional open-lab sessions planned for evenings and weekends.
