Lighthouse of Broward is empowering through technology!

Lighthouse of Broward is redefining accessibility by placing technology at the center of its mission. The nonprofit, long known for serving the blind and visually impaired, has launched a series of initiatives designed to turn smartphones, tablets, and specialized software into tools for independence.

Rather than simply handing out devices, the organization focuses on hands-on training. Clients learn to use screen-reading software, voice-activated assistants, and navigation apps that allow them to travel, shop, and communicate without constant assistance. For many, the biggest breakthrough comes from learning to use a standard iPhone or Android phone with accessibility features they never knew existed.

"We are not just teaching buttons," a program coordinator explained. "We are teaching confidence. When someone can order their own groceries or read their own mail, that changes everything."

The program also addresses the digital divide for older adults who lost vision later in life. These individuals often feel left behind as technology evolves. Lighthouse of Broward offers small group sessions where participants can ask questions without embarrassment. The goal is to make technology feel less intimidating and more like a natural extension of daily life.

Beyond personal devices, the organization is exploring smart home technology. Clients are learning to control lights, thermostats, and door locks through voice commands. This reduces reliance on sighted family members for basic tasks.

Lighthouse of Broward sees technology not as a luxury but as a bridge to employment, education, and social connection. As one recent graduate put it, "I used to think I would never use a computer again. Now I run my own small business from my tablet."

The message is clear: empowerment does not come from the device itself, but from the knowledge and support that surrounds it.
