Researchers at Montana State University are developing a novel technology aimed at protecting hydroponic crops from dangerous bacterial contamination. The project seeks to address a growing vulnerability in indoor farming systems, where waterborne pathogens can spread rapidly through nutrient solutions, wiping out entire harvests.
The team is working on a treatment that targets harmful bacteria without damaging the delicate root systems of plants grown without soil. Early tests show the method can significantly reduce the presence of pathogens like E. coli and Salmonella, which pose serious risks to both crop yields and consumer health. Unlike traditional chemical sanitizers, the new approach is designed to be gentle on the plants while remaining tough on microbes.
Hydroponic farming has gained popularity in Montana and other cold-climate regions because it allows for year-round food production in controlled environments. However, the closed-loop water systems that make hydroponics efficient also create ideal breeding grounds for bacteria if not properly managed. A single contaminated batch of water can lead to widespread loss.
The MSU researchers hope their work will give farmers a practical, cost-effective tool to prevent such disasters. By making hydroponic systems more resilient, the technology could help strengthen local food supplies and reduce reliance on produce shipped from distant states. The team is now refining the method and plans to test it in commercial greenhouses later this year.
