A new piece of technology is set to change how Anoka County handles drug evidence in criminal investigations. Officials are preparing to deploy a device that can identify controlled substances much quicker than traditional lab methods. The tool is designed to cut down the waiting time that often slows down cases involving suspected narcotics.
Currently, forensic teams in the county rely on sending samples to a state lab for analysis. That process can take weeks or even months, depending on the backlog. The new device, which uses advanced chemical analysis, can provide results in a matter of hours. It works by scanning a sample and matching its molecular structure against a database of known drugs.
Law enforcement leaders say this speed is critical. Faster results mean detectives can make arrests or rule out suspects sooner. It also helps prosecutors build cases more efficiently. The device is portable, so officers can potentially use it at crime scenes or in the field, though initial plans focus on use within the county's forensic lab.
There are some limitations. The technology cannot replace all lab testing, especially for complex cases that require detailed quantification. But for routine identification of common drugs like fentanyl, methamphetamine, or cocaine, it is expected to be a game-changer. County officials are finalizing training for staff and expect the device to be operational within the next few months. They hope it will reduce case backlogs and improve public safety response times.
