SDUSD pushes to limit technology in classrooms

SDUSD pushes to limit technology in classrooms

The San Diego Unified School District is advancing a new resolution aimed at reducing the role of technology in its classrooms, with changes set to take effect in August. The proposal, which prioritizes student well-being, seeks to address growing concerns over excessive screen time and its impact on learning and mental health.

Under the plan, teachers would be encouraged to limit the use of personal devices like smartphones and tablets during instructional hours. The district also plans to review how digital tools are integrated into lesson plans, pushing for more traditional, hands-on activities. Officials argue that constant access to screens can distract students, reduce face-to-face interaction, and contribute to anxiety.

The resolution does not call for a complete ban on technology. Instead, it focuses on setting boundaries. For example, devices may still be used for specific educational purposes, such as research or collaborative projects, but unstructured browsing or social media use would be discouraged.

Some parents and educators have voiced support, noting that students often struggle to focus when screens are always available. Others worry about losing valuable digital learning tools. The district plans to gather feedback from teachers and families before finalizing the policy.

If approved, the new guidelines would mark a significant shift for one of California's largest school systems, reflecting a broader national conversation about the role of technology in education.
