Advanced DNA technology has finally put a name to St. Petersburg's last unidentified homicide victim, solving a decades-old mystery for both detectives and a grieving family. The Pinellas County Medical Examiner's Office, in collaboration with Othram Inc., a private forensic lab, successfully identified the man as Johnny Bradshaw, 29.
Bradshaw's remains were discovered in a vacant lot in 1980, a victim of a double homicide. For 46 years, he was known only as "John Doe," his case growing cold despite numerous investigative efforts over the decades. Traditional methods had failed to reveal his identity, leaving his family without answers.
The breakthrough came through forensic genetic genealogy, a technique that cross-references crime scene DNA with public genetic databases to find familial connections. This modern scientific approach built a family tree that ultimately led investigators to Bradshaw's relatives, who had long wondered about his fate.
Authorities confirmed Bradshaw was from the St. Petersburg area. His identification not only closes the book on the city's last "John Doe" case but also provides his family with long-awaited closure, ending their painful decades of uncertainty. The investigation into the circumstances of his death remains active as detectives pursue new leads with this critical identification.
