The long-sought dream of commercial fusion energy hinges on our ability to observe and control the chaotic, super-hot plasma where fusion reactions occur. A new, comprehensive report sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy concludes that a major leap in diagnostic technology is urgently needed to make this a reality.
The report, the product of a workshop uniting 70 experts from across the fusion community, calls for significant investment in the advanced "sensors" that monitor the extreme conditions inside fusion devices. These diagnostics must precisely measure rapidly shifting plasma properties like temperature, density, and magnetic fields—data essential for stabilizing and confining the volatile fuel.
Experts identified seven critical development areas, spanning from the physics of self-heating "burning plasmas" to the engineering demands of future pilot plants. The consensus is clear: without next-generation tools to see inside the reaction, progress toward a practical fusion power plant will remain stalled. This push for better diagnostics represents a fundamental engineering challenge that must be solved to harness the star-like power of fusion here on Earth.
