The state of West Virginia is launching a groundbreaking initiative to scientifically measure the health impacts of prescribing fruits and vegetables to patients. As the first state authorized to use U.S. Department of Agriculture funding for this purpose, it is piloting innovative technology within its existing FARMacy WV program.
This initiative employs a device called the Veggie Meter, a non-invasive scanner that measures skin carotenoid scores. These scores provide an objective, data-driven biomarker of an individual's fruit and vegetable intake, moving beyond traditional self-reported surveys.
The FARMacy WV program allows healthcare providers to write "prescriptions" for fresh produce, which participants can redeem at local farmers' markets and retailers. By integrating the Veggie Meter, the state aims to gather concrete evidence on how increased consumption of fresh foods directly affects participants' nutritional status and overall health outcomes.
State officials and health advocates highlight that this data is crucial. It will demonstrate the tangible benefits of produce prescription programs, potentially influencing future healthcare strategies and funding decisions. The pilot represents a significant step toward validating food-as-medicine approaches with hard science, with the goal of creating sustainable models to improve public health, particularly in areas facing high rates of diet-related chronic diseases.
