White House Directs Federal Agencies and Tech Leaders to Block China from Acquiring ‘American AI’

White House Directs Federal Agencies and Tech Leaders to Block China from Acquiring ‘American AI’

The White House has issued a sweeping directive to all federal agencies and major technology corporations, demanding immediate action to prevent what it describes as a coordinated, state-sponsored campaign by China to steal American artificial intelligence technology. In a classified memo circulated this week, senior administration officials accused Beijing of systematically targeting U.S. AI breakthroughs through cyber espionage, industrial theft, and illicit technology transfers.

The memorandum, which carries the weight of a presidential directive, instructs the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, the National Security Agency, and the Office of Science and Technology Policy to work in lockstep with private-sector leaders from companies such as Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Nvidia. The goal is to identify and close every vulnerability in the AI supply chain—from research labs to cloud servers to semiconductor fabrication plants.

“The United States cannot afford to have its most critical emerging technology weaponized by an adversary that has repeatedly demonstrated its willingness to violate intellectual property laws and national security protocols,” the memo states. It further calls for enhanced export controls, stricter visa screening for foreign researchers, and mandatory reporting of any suspicious attempts to access proprietary AI models or training data.

The directive also mandates the creation of a new interagency task force, dubbed the “AI Protection Initiative,” which will coordinate real-time threat intelligence sharing between government cybersecurity teams and corporate security divisions. Companies that fail to comply with the new security protocols could face restrictions on federal contracts and access to classified computing resources.

Critics within the tech industry have expressed concern that the measures could stifle legitimate international collaboration and slow the pace of innovation. However, the White House insists that the urgency is justified, citing recent intelligence reports that China has already infiltrated at least three major U.S. AI research institutions and exfiltrated proprietary algorithms used in autonomous systems and advanced language models.

The memo concludes with a stark warning: “The race for AI supremacy is not a marathon—it is a sprint, and the United States must ensure that no competitor crosses the finish line with stolen technology.”
