Got a rules question? The USGA is harnessing AI technology to get you fast, accurate answers

The United States Golf Association is testing a new artificial intelligence tool designed to give golfers fast and accurate answers to their rules questions. The platform, called Rule AI, draws on more than 130 years of the organization's expertise and its proprietary database of rules information.

Instead of flipping through a rulebook or waiting for a phone call, players and officials can now type in a specific scenario and get a clear, concise response. The AI has been trained on the full history of USGA decisions, interpretations, and clarifications, which means it can handle everything from simple drop procedures to complex boundary disputes.

The USGA says the goal is to make the rules more accessible and less intimidating. Many golfers avoid looking up rules during a round because it feels slow or confusing. This tool aims to change that by delivering an answer in seconds.

The system is still in a testing phase, and the USGA is gathering feedback from users to improve its accuracy. Early trials have focused on common amateur situations, but the organization plans to expand the AI's knowledge to cover tournament-level rulings and international variations.

If the rollout goes well, Rule AI could become a standard resource for club pros, course officials, and everyday players who just want to know whether they can take relief from a cart path or what happens when a ball hits a sprinkler head. The USGA sees this as a natural step forward, combining decades of institutional knowledge with modern technology to keep the game moving.
