Minnesota sheriff taking down Flock cameras despite defending the technology

A Minnesota sheriff has decided to remove automated license plate reader cameras from his county, even though he previously defended the technology as a useful crime-fighting tool. The decision comes amid growing public debate over the constitutionality of the devices and a series of vandalism attacks on the hardware in Minnesota and other states.

The sheriff, who had earlier praised the Flock Safety cameras for helping solve property crimes and locate missing persons, said the constant controversy and physical damage to the units made them more of a liability than an asset. He noted that while the cameras are legal and have clear benefits, the emotional and political backlash from residents has reached a point where keeping them installed is no longer practical.

The license plate readers work by scanning every passing plate and comparing it against databases of stolen vehicles or cars linked to wanted individuals. Supporters argue they are a passive, efficient tool that does not require officers to pull over innocent drivers. Critics, however, contend that the continuous surveillance of every motorist creates a permanent record of innocent people's movements, which they say violates reasonable expectations of privacy.

Vandalism has become a significant problem. Several cameras in the region have been spray-painted, cut down, or otherwise disabled in recent months. The sheriff said that repair costs and the time spent dealing with these incidents further tipped the scales toward removal.

He emphasized that his office will still rely on traditional patrol methods and other investigative tools. The sheriff also said he hopes the public conversation about surveillance technology will continue, but he wants his department to focus on building trust rather than defending equipment that has become a lightning rod for anger.
