A new water treatment technology has arrived in the Permian Basin of Texas, aimed at tackling the region's produced water challenges. MYCELX, a company specializing in industrial filtration, has introduced a system designed to recover residual oil and enhance water quality before disposal or recycling.
The system targets the high-volume wastewater generated during oil and gas extraction. In the Permian, operators often struggle with water that contains emulsified oil and solids, making reuse difficult. MYCELX's approach uses a proprietary filtration media to separate these contaminants, allowing for cleaner water that can be more easily treated for reuse in hydraulic fracturing or other operations.
According to the company, the technology also recovers small amounts of oil that would otherwise be lost. This recovered oil can be sold, adding a revenue stream while reducing waste. The system is modular and can be deployed at well sites or centralized facilities.
The Permian Basin has seen a surge in water management needs as production remains high. Operators face increasing pressure to reduce freshwater use and manage disposal volumes. MYCELX claims its system can handle high flow rates and variable water quality, which are common in the region. The deployment marks a step toward more efficient water handling in one of the busiest oil fields in the United States.
