PPM Technologies and Key Technology have introduced a new fully-integrated potato chip production line, merging their respective equipment into a single, streamlined system. The line combines PPM's frying, seasoning, and product handling capabilities with Key's advanced optical sorting technology, creating a unified solution for chip manufacturers.
The integrated design aims to reduce the complexity of managing separate machines from different vendors. By linking PPM's cooking and coating systems directly with Key's sorters, operators can monitor and adjust the entire process from a single control point. This setup is expected to improve consistency in chip color, texture, and seasoning coverage while minimizing product waste.
Key Technology's optical sorters use high-resolution cameras and laser sensors to detect defects such as discoloration, burns, or foreign material. When paired with PPM's frying and seasoning equipment, the system can reject flawed chips before they move to packaging, reducing the need for manual inspection. PPM's seasoning drums and conveyors are designed to handle the output from the sorters without disrupting flow.
The companies say the line is built for high-volume production, with capacities tailored to large-scale snack manufacturers. Early testing showed a reduction in downtime during changeovers, as the integrated controls allow for faster adjustments to recipe settings. Both firms are offering the line as a turnkey option, meaning customers can install it without needing to source components from multiple suppliers.
The launch comes as snack producers look for ways to automate more of their operations. Combining sorting and processing into one system could help manufacturers cut labor costs and improve product quality, though the upfront investment is higher than buying separate machines. PPM and Key Technology have not disclosed pricing or announced the first installations.
